To examine the workings and adequacy of the
welfare system in a selected country, and ways
of increasing wealth, health or safety for those
in/out of work.
Objective
At the end of the module students will:
* Know the current trends in poverty and unemployment
in a selected country or urban area;
* Understand some of the current issues and
arguments in welfare and social provisions/trends
in a selected country;
* Understand biblical teaching about responses
to the poor;
* Understand some of the factors affecting the
working of welfare states;
* Be able to suggest and justify a programme
for furthering the interest of the poor in the
students' selected country.
Content:
Poverty: its causes and its effects. Responses
to poverty. Current trends in poverty and unemployment.
A study of some prevailing attitudes and arguments:
faith versus dependency: a comparative study
of the role of the individual, the community
and the nation. Welfare economics and future
possibilities. Current and future threats to
the welfare state in selected countries, with
particular reference to population trends, government
cuts and restrictions and priorities, the elderly.
The poor as a social group in Old Testament.
The use of the Old Testament and New Testament
as models for a study of the generation and
distribution of wealth. Faith and morale. Review
of ideas on wealth redistribution, including
socialism and free market philosophies, in the
light of biblical examples of attempts to tackle
this issue. Construction of possible strategies
for dealing with the problems of the poor. Cultivating
vision and cultivating faith. Assessment: Historical
review of poverty with reference to students'
selected country.
